Denton County’s chapter of the NAACP will hold a local candidates forum from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Central Fire Station, 332 E. Hickory St.

Willie Hudspeth, who is organizing the event, said as of Friday that 27 Republican and five Democrat candidates have noted they plan to attend the forum, including the candidates for district attorney and county judge.

“We’re just trying to inform people, trying to help people make a decision on what they want to do,” Hudspeth said.

The candidates will be asked three questions, which they have been given already to prepare. At the forum they will be given a minute to respond at the event.

Voters will be able to meet and greet candidates between 9 and 9:45 a.m. The question-and-answer period begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 11:30 a.m. Voters will then be able to meet again with candidates until noon.

Last time the organization held a candidate forum a few years ago, only 12 candidates showed up. Hudspeth said he was pleasantly surprised by the turnout this year.

“We’re going to have to get a different location next time,” he said. “We won’t have enough room. It’ll be interesting.”

The forum is among several candidates forums that have been scheduled this election season. One forum, however, the Republican Women’s Club forum on local candidates set for today, has been canceled.

The Denton County Young Republicans candidates forum is set for Tuesday, from 6 to 9 p.m., at The Pourhouse, 3350 Unicorn Lake Blvd. in Denton. The forum will feature candidates for District 64 state representative — incumbent Myra Crownover and challenger Read King — and the Precinct 1 constable candidates — incumbent Jesse Flores and challenger Johnny Hammons.

The Denton County Democratic Party will hold its annual chili supper and candidates forum Feb. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. in Denton. The cost is $20.
