Academy Sports and Outdoors set for Rayzor Ranch Marketplace

Academy Sports and Outdoors will open a 72,000-square-foot store in Denton later this year, the latest retailer to sign on with Rayzor Ranch Marketplace.

This will be the 17th Academy store in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and will start the third phase of development at the Marketplace.

“We’re always looking to expand, and we’re excited to offer Denton a location to be a one-stop shop,” said Allan Rojas, senior communications coordinator for Academy.

The store is also expected to add about 150 jobs, which will be a mix of full-time and part-time positions, he said.

The location is expected to provide a large boost to the development, said Linda Hinton, general manager of the center for RED Development, the developer in charge of Rayzor Ranch Marketplace.

“It’s going to greatly help the project overall,” she said. “We’re really positioning ourselves for Rayzor Ranch Marketplace to be the place for shoppers in Denton to come shop, dine and get things done.”

Academy has been interested in adding a Denton location for a few years, but was waiting for the economy to pick back up, and to find the right location, said Aimee Bissett, director of economic development for the city.

The closest competitor to the incoming store will be Sports Authority on Loop 288, Bissett said.

“As other stores have come online at Rayzor Ranch, we haven’t seen sales tax revenue go down in Denton Crossing, and that’s where Sports Authority is,” she said. “What we’re seeing is that we’re drawing a market that has been going outside of Denton, and is now staying inside Denton to meet their shopping needs.”

While Hinton and Rojas would not provide a project timeline, Bissett said she anticipated construction starting by the end of the month and the business opening later this year, potentially as early as October.

With this and other anticipated additions this year, such as Ross Dress for Less and Salons by JC, Hinton said she anticipated even higher levels of traffic at the development this year.

“They are going to fill a nice niche for us and the community, and it certainly fits well with everything else we have to offer at Marketplace,” she said.
