More than $3.8 billion in unclaimed property is waiting for Texans to find it, including $33 million with Denton connections.

Denton County Treasurer Cindy Brown is partnering with the Texas Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property Outreach Team to have an Unclaimed Property Search Event on Wednesday to help North Texas residents search for unclaimed funds. About $33 million is listed as unclaimed by residents who may have lived in Denton County.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Joseph A. Carroll Administration Building, 401 W. Hickory St., Suite 309. Workers will answer questions and help residents search the state’s unclaimed property database and fill out claim forms, if necessary.

“Many people don’t have the technology or the means to know about this database,” Brown said. “Advertising for this event and having it local is an option for constituents to let us see if we can help them recover their funds.”

Most of the time, unclaimed funds are from bank accounts, loans that have refunds attached to them, escrow accounts or other financial accounts, she said.

“After they are dormant for three years, they are required to be reported to the state comptroller as unclaimed funds,” Brown said. “It’s not just intergovernmental funds. It could be private funds held by companies, banks, corporations in the state of Texas.”

According to the state comptroller’s office, people who attend do not have to show an ID to search, but if they are filing a claim, they will need a picture ID and proof of their Social Security number to speed up the approval process.

“One thing the staff mentioned to me … typically the claims filed in person are more expeditiously than if the person was to file a claim online, which can take seven to eight months,” she said.

The state comptroller who administers the program will have appropriate means to gather and safeguard that information against inappropriate claims.

Brown said employees in her own office have already had success finding unclaimed funds.

“Even my husband was on the list — a refund from a doctor’s office,” she said. “It was just 25 bucks, but it was his.”
