Fatal traffic accident occurs on Sherman Drive in northeast Denton
Tessa Butler, 27, was killed during a head-on collision late Sunday on Sherman Drive in northeast Denton.
According to Denton police spokesman Ryan Grelle, a pickup driven by 21-year-old Hector Soto of Garland was southbound on Sherman Drive when it collided head-on with a four-door Mazda just north of Long Road north of Loop 288.
The first call about the accident came in to the police department at 11 p.m., Grelle said.
According to police, the driver of the pickup had crossed the center line to pass other southbound vehicles when the collision occurred.
Butler, who was a passenger in the Mazda, was killed instantly in the accident, police said.
Both CareFlite and PHI Air Medical units were used to transport Soto and the driver of the Mazda, 49-year-old Roger Bryant of Denton, to the Medical Center of Plano.
As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, both men were said to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Denton Fire Department officials reported that the pickup became airborne for several yards following the collision and landed on a fence and caught fire.
Fire officials said that at some point during the collision, the driver of the pickup was ejected from his vehicle before it erupted into flames.
Grelle said that the Denton Police Department plans to file intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault charges in connection with the accident by the end of the week.
