Les Cockrell: Parliamentarians slate procedure workshop

A parliamentary procedure workshop will be offered Saturday in the training room of the Denton County Election Administration Building, 701 Kimberly Drive in Denton.

Titled “Bring This Meeting to Order: The Practical Application of Parliamentary Procedure,” the workshop will be hosted by Golden Triangle Parliamentarians, a unit of the Texas State Association of Parliamentarians and the National Association of Parliamentarians.

Registration will be at 8:30 a.m., followed by the workshop from 9 a.m. to noon. A membership exam will be offered at 1 p.m.

The workshop will cover the history of parliamentary procedure, commonly used motions, eight steps in processing a motion, agendas and meeting management, and preparation of minutes.

Denton Area Retired School Personnel group to meet

The April meeting of the Denton Area Retired School Personnel Association will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, 1500 Long Road in Denton.

Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. The program will be “Preserving the Legacy — Sharing the Goal, Actives and Retirees Working Together.”

The program will include a new video from the association starring Bill Barnett with a guest appearance by Tim Lee.

Cash donations will be collected for the Apple Tree Project.


Spirit squad to lead event for Locks of Love

Members of the Pecan Creek Elementary School Spirit Squad will perform and donations for Locks of Love will be accepted during an event set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the school, 4400 Lakeview Blvd. in Denton.

Pony tails measuring a minimum of 6 inches in length will be accepted or donors can have their hair cut at the event, organizers said.

Youth event planned Friday at Cross Roads church

An event titled Dream Night 2014 for young people in sixth to 12th grades is planned at 7 p.m. Friday at Covenant Church, 8690 Liberty Road in Cross Roads.

The free event will feature dance crews, light shows, food and an after party. Prizes will be given away.

‘Wizard of Oz’ performances set at Lewisville theater

The Acting Studio will present performances of the musical Wizard of Oz on Friday and Saturday at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater.

Showtime is 7 p.m. both days. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $16 for seniors and children ages 12 and younger. To order tickets, visit Advance tickets cannot be purchased at MCL Grand.

The Acting Studio is operated in Grapevine and Frisco by owners Shane and Erica Peterman. Staff members teach classes in voice, dance and acting for stage and film for students of all ages.

The theater is at 100 N. Charles St., between Main and Church streets.

Free public parking is available along Main and Church streets, or at nearby Lewisville City Hall.


Wildflower hike highlights Saturday events at park

A wildflower hike will lead off activities planned at the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park on Saturday.

The half-mile hike along the Vanishing Prairies Trail will begin at 10 a.m. at pavilion 1. Participants will learn about some of the wildflowers found in the park.

A program on mammals titled “Fast and Furriest” is planned at 1 p.m. Saturday in picnic Pavilion 1 at Johnson Branch. Participants will learn how to identify mammals found in the park.

Closing out activities on Saturday will be “Can I Eat This?” This program will begin at 3 p.m. and will offer information about edible plants and their historical uses. Participants will meet at the amphitheater near the fishing pond.

Bike repair class planned Saturday at Denton library

A class on bike repair will be offered at 1 p.m. Saturday at Denton’s Emily Fowler Central Library.

Ryan Lane will discuss repair using basic tools. There will be demonstrations of fixing flats, lubricating a chain and adjusting brakes. The class will also cover more serious problems and where to find help when needed.

Members of Denton Herb Society to meet Saturday

The Denton Herb Society will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St.

Guest speaker will be Dakotah Lemme, who will give a presentation titled “Survival Sprouting.” She will discuss sprouting for nourishment and good health.

Library friends group slates wine and cheese reception

The Friends of the Denton Public Libraries will have its annual Wine and Cheese Membership Drive Reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St.

The event is free and open to anyone interested in becoming a member.

The organization holds quarterly book sales and operates Second Hand Prose, a used bookstore located in the North Branch Library. All money raised goes to fund library programs that are not covered in the annual budget, such as literacy programs and summer reading programs for children.


Saturday concert to benefit relief ministry at church

“Jazz for Hunger, with a Touch of Gospel,” a concert to benefit the relief ministry food pantry at Asbury United Methodist Church in Denton, is planned at 7 p.m. Saturday at the church, 117 Hercules Lane.

The concert will feature Dana Rose, C.A. Bell and the Jett Quartet.

Admission is free, but attendees are asked to bring food items or to make a donation for the food pantry.

VNA Ann’s Haven slates bereavement luncheon

VNA Ann’s Haven will host a bereavement luncheon for members of the community grieving the death of a loved one, at noon Tuesday at the Denton Elks Lodge. 228 E. Oak St.

Guest speaker will be attorney Leigh Hilton, who will discuss estate planning.

A catered lunch will be provided at no charge.

Denton Christian Women’s Connection to host event

Denton Christian Women’s Connection will present its annual “Spring Fling” fashion show from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 10, at Denton Country Club, 1213 Country Club Road in Argyle.

Coldwater Creek will present a spring and summer style show.

Author Lane Jordan will speak about her book 12 Steps to Becoming an Organized Woman and share how God has impacted her life.

Cost is $15 inclusive, and reservations must be made by Monday. Reservations must be honored. Complimentary child care is available for ages 6 months to 5 years with reservations.
