Denton firefighters can be spotted at major intersections today and Saturday as part of their annual fundraising efforts with the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Fill the Boot” campaign.

“The support we have received in the past has been phenomenal and we appreciate that,” said Battalion Chief Brian Glenn.

Firefighters all over have been raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since the International Association of Firefighters became the first national sponsor of MDA in 1954. Denton has been participating in the campaign for more than 50 years.

In addition to funding research teams worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of 200 medical clinics and facilitates support groups for families affected by neuromuscular disease.

Glenn said firefighters usually have a whole week to raise funds, but this year they are just doing a concentrated three-day effort and hoping for really nice weather.

“The longer time frame was usually for the weather, but this time we are going to have shifts rotating out all day [Friday and Saturday] unless they get called out,” he said.

Firefighters should be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday at the following intersections: Carroll Boulevard and University Drive, University Drive and Bonnie Brae Street, University Drive and Interstate 35, Interstate 35E and Fort Worth Drive, Teasley Lane and Dallas Drive, Teasley Lane and Loop 288 Lillian Miller and Loop 288 and Brinker Road.

“We raised $60,000 during Fill the Boot last year and we are hoping to exceed that this year by at least a dollar,” Glenn said.

He said firefighters will also host an annual golf tournament at Champions Circle on May 15 and are still looking for sponsors and donors to help the event become a success.
