City set to honor Malone during council meeting

City leaders will honor Olympic short track speedskater and silver medalist Jordan Malone during the Denton City Council’s regular meeting tonight.

Mayor Mark Burroughs will issue a proclamation in honor of Malone’s accomplishments at the beginning of the meeting, which is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 215 E. McKinney St.

Malone and his teammates on the U.S. men’s 5,000-meter relay squad, J.R. Celski, Eddy Alvarez and Chris Creveling, won the silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. They finished with a time of 6:42.371, just behind the Russian squad’s finish of 6:42.100.

Since then, Malone has been making the rounds to local schools, sharing lessons he has learned with area students.

While growing up in Denton in the 1990s, Malone spent about seven years participating in Denton Parks and Recreation Department programs.

He was involved in a variety of city summer camps, including those focusing on sports skills.

He was also a small child with asthma and suffered from dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
