Brown chosen as vice president of finance and administration

A top finance administrator at Texas A&M Commerce has been named the next vice president of finance and administration for the University of North Texas.

Bob Brown, who is currently vice president for business and administration at Texas A&M Commerce, will begin work at UNT on May 12, overseeing budgeting and finances including general accounting, treasury services and contractors. Brown is a certified public accountant and a UNT alumnus.

“I’m very, very excited to be returning to my alma mater,” he said Wednesday. “I’m excited to get there and I can’t wait.”

From his time at Texas A&M Commerce, Brown said he learned how to work within a university system and also at a growing institution, which will benefit him in the new job.

“I bring experience with an institution that was growing very quickly and had to develop ways to respond to growing demand, and also had the benefit of being part of a very, very well-run system and enjoying the way the system and the campuses work together,” he said.

UNT President Neal Smatresk said that bringing in someone with experience in public higher education in Texas is a huge advantage and is a relief.

“We feel really lucky here at UNT because we found someone highly qualified as a chief financial officer, who has experience in higher education, experience in Texas and oh, he can be here in a month,” Smatresk said. “It doesn’t get better than that.”

In an email to the UNT community announcing the hire, Smatresk addressed the current financial issues at the university, and said that Brown will help provide leadership in stabilizing the university finances.

“As you know, UNT is facing continuing budgeting and finance issues. Since my arrival, we have been working to understand and correct those issues,” Smatresk wrote in the email. “Bob has a proven track record of developing and implementing internal controls and cost-saving measures.”

While at Texas A&M Commerce, Brown led university appropriations requests to the state Legislature, improved internal controls and implemented cost saving strategies throughout the school, officials said. Before working at Texas A&M Commerce, he worked with the Dallas County Community College District, North Harris Montgomery Community College District in Houston and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C.
