Two dead, five injured in Sunday evening crash

Two people died and five others were injured in a Sunday evening crash after a car, driving on the wrong side of the highway, struck a trio of motorcycles near the Denton County-Wise County line.

Thomas Garcia, 53, of Ardmore Okla., died at the scene and his passenger, Cassie Turner, 33, also of Ardmore, died later at Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. The accident happened when a small Toyota vehicle traveling south on FM51 crossed the double yellow lines and plowed into Garcia and the other motorcyclist riding side by side with him.

Trooper Lonny Haschel, Texas Highway Patrol spokesman, said the third motorcycle was behind the pair as the group traveled north. The driver of the third motorcycle was able to evade the car after it struck the others.

The two people on the second motorcycle were taken via air ambulance to Medical Center of Plano with serious injuries.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the car were taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in downton Fort Worth and a 6-year-old boy in the backseat of the car was taken by air ambulance to Cooke Children’s Medical Center with serious injuries. All three were from Weatherford.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation Haschel said.

“We’re still trying to piece together exactly why the car was on the wrong side of the road. There’s no clear reason right now.”
