The Denton police and fire departments are preparing to face off while raising money to benefit the United Way of Denton County.

The two agencies will participate in a “Rib Eating Challenge for a Cause” to be held at Texas Roadhouse, 2817 S. Interstate 35E, from 4 to 7 p.m. June 17.

Denton police Officer Cleopatra Birckbichler said the competition between the departments takes place at 6 p.m. but is encouraging everyone to come out and enjoy an array of activities for the whole family.

She said face painting, live music and fire and police vehicles will just be a few of the many event features offered for families to enjoy. Door prizes will given out throughout the event.

“I encourage families to come out, have fun and then go inside to have a nice meal and benefit the United Way,” she said.

Birckbichler said the restaurant will donate 10 percent of its sales that day to the United Way of Denton County on behalf of the Denton police and fire departments.

“For us at the police department, we host a cookout in the parking lot each June and most of us at the department make donations to the United Way already,” she said. “So this was just another way to further those efforts and donate even more.”
