School districts begin summer hours

Through Aug. 1, Denton school district facilities will have extended hours Monday through Thursday and will be closed on Fridays.

On Monday, the district began operating under summer hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Since 2010, the district has had a four-day work week with longer hours during summer months to cut utility costs.

“Because of the size of our district ... it saved us $10,000 for every Friday,” said Sharon Cox, a district spokeswoman. “We appreciate the parent and student support during these Friday closures because it is a huge savings to the district.

“That’s almost a couple positions that we’re able to save ... by working longer Monday through Thursday.”

The Denton school district will resume its regular operating hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, on Aug. 4, Cox said.

Other area school districts that have announced their facilities will be open Monday through Thursday and closed Fridays throughout most of the summer include Aubrey, Argyle, Krum, Lake Dallas, Little Elm, Lewisville, Northwest, Pilot Point and Sanger.

According to the Ponder school district’s website, through Aug. 15, the district’s administration offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon Fridays.
