Carine Feyten, the incoming president and chancellor of Texas Woman’s University, will make a base salary of $425,000 per year, according to her employment contract.

The contract, which was signed Wednesday, also provides that Feyten will live in the new University House with expenses such as cable and Internet paid and receive a “recent” car from the university with insurance and maintenance costs paid on her behalf.

Feyten will begin in the position Tuesday. The contract begins on her start day and ends June 30, 2017.

She will make slightly less than her predecessor, Ann Stuart, whose base pay had been $430,000 since 2008. Prior to that, Stuart made $388,397.

In addition to Feyten’s base salary and other compensation, the university agreed to pay most of the costs for her move to Denton and the fee for her to attend the Harvard Institute for New Presidents in July.

Under the contract, Feyten will have annual performance reviews and outline goals with the TWU Board of Regents annually.

The contract is similar to those of other university presidents, said Sue Bancroft, chairwoman of the Board of Regents. With the paperwork done, she and other university officials are excited to have Feyten begin next week, Bancroft said.

“We’re excited that Dr. Feyten is starting, and she will do a great job of transitioning in,” Bancroft said. “The contract is pretty much standard and what’s pretty usual in the market right now.”

The base salaries for Stuart and Feyten are higher than the national average for public university presidents, according to the most recent data available, from the 2011-12 academic year. Nationally, the median base salary for a public university president that year was $383,800.

The salary will be more than double what Feyten made at Miami University in Ohio, where she served as a professor and dean of the College of Education, Health and Society. The most recent salary information shows she made $208,518 in 2009 and also 2010, according to the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions. The institute collects data on public employee salaries.

Neal Smatresk, president of the University of North Texas, earns $505,000 annually, according to his contract that began in February. However, Smatresk’s contract does not provide for a house, compensation for housing or a vehicle.
