Council continuing search for next head of police department

Krum city officials are still searching for a new police chief.

Despite current Denton County Precinct 1 Constable Jesse Flores’ public statement last month that he had an offer from the city to be the next police chief, the City Council is continuing its search to lead the department.

Krum city attorney Lance Vanzant said despite Flores’ statements, he was never offered the job.

“There would have been a council vote and there wasn’t one,” Vanzant said.

In recent weeks, the City Council had narrowed its options to two candidates: Diron Hill, Italy’s former police chief, and Flores.

Vanzant said he was not sure what form of search would be done to fill the position, but the last he heard, that was what city officials were planning. The new search does not preclude Hill and Flores from renewed consideration.

“I have no comment at this time,” Flores said, when asked about his standing with the city.

Flores noted in a June 10 interview with the Denton Record-Chronicle that he had been offered the position and would accept it. He said he planned to be chief as well as hold onto his constable position until the end of the year when it goes into the hands of Johnny Hammons, who defeated Flores in the 2014 Republican primary election.

Were Flores to have been offered and taken the job, County Commissioner Hugh Coleman said after talking to county attorney John Feldt, the county would likely have taken issue with Flores trying to hold dual positions.

The Krum Police Department has been run by Terry Hargis in an interim capacity since former Police Chief Dennis Bassinger retired about a year ago.

When asked about the situation, council member Chris Rodriguez deferred to Krum Mayor Terri Wilson. Wilson, however, could not be reached for comment after numerous efforts to contact her.
