TWU’s new chancellor launches into first day
Before Carine Feyten made her way onto the Texas Woman’s University campus from the University House on Tuesday, she had already sent out a message on Twitter.
With the caption “Off to my first Pioneer Day!,” a photo of Feyten in the driveway of her new home showed her first-day outfit and a big smile, the kind you see before a kid takes on the first day of a new grade level.
Feyten continued to send messages and photos on Twitter throughout her first day as president and chancellor of TWU, an immediate step to communicate with students, she said.
“It’s reflective of how I would like to launch my presidency and position as chancellor for communication — being accessible and being involved with students, faculty and staff,” she said. “I think the more you have involvement like that at all levels, it creates a closeness, I think, that builds school spirit.”
Feyten posted photos throughout the day on her Twitter account, including images of a lunch with faculty members, a Frenchy’s van welcoming her to Denton, and student leaders at an afternoon tea.
While Feyten has been in Denton for about a week, she has focused on moving into the new University House and getting to know the city before starting at TWU.
On Tuesday, she went to several meetings to learn about what faculty, staff and students liked about the university and what they want to happen in the future. Surprisingly, all groups seem to be on the same page, she said.
“The amazing thing is there’s great consistency in the answers,” she said. “The faculty are really committed to the students, and the students are really appreciating the personal attention they get from the faculty, so it was nice to see that both groups liked what is happening.”
In the coming days, Feyten said she plans to continue to meet with students, faculty and staff to learn about the university and finish unpacking.
“I’m still working on making it a home and not just a house,” she said. “We’re still in the process of unpacking boxes and figuring out where to put what, but little by little it’s starting to come together.”
