Singer SoMo arrested in Hickory Creek

Singer and former University of North Texas student Joseph Somers-Morales was arrested Sunday night on a drug charge in Hickory Creek.

Somers-Morales, whose R&B stage name is SoMo, was charged with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana. The charge is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. He posted $1,000 bail and was released from the Denton County Jail on Monday morning.

Somers-Morales attended UNT from the fall of 2006 to the fall of 2007, according to the university. The Denison native later gained fame on the Internet and caught the eye of Republic Records. Republic signed SoMo last fall, adding him to a stable that includes Drake, ZZ Top and Psy.

SoMo’s 2013 single “Ride” was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in April. The song was featured on his self-titled debut album.
