Local nonprofit founder earns national award

Denton resident Susan Frank, founder and executive director of Hearts for Homes, was recently selected for the National Public Citizen of the Year award from the National Association of Social Workers.

The award was established to honor outstanding members of the community whose accomplishments exemplify the values and mission of professional social work. The recipients are not social workers.

Frank, a former physical education teacher at Liberty Christian School who launched a nonprofit agency to repair homes for the elderly, was one of four national award recipients.

In 2006, Frank founded Hearts for Homes in Denton County. She gathered plumbers, roofers, builders, electricians and volunteers to help older, low-income residents repair their homes in order to provide them a safe, comfortable place to live out their latter years. Her organization has made significant repairs to more than 120 family homes since its inception and made a huge impact on the lives of these seniors in need.
