Flower Mound to spray for mosquitoes

A Flower Mound crew will spray for mosquitoes Monday and Tuesday night in the Lake Forest Estates neighborhood after officials confirmed that a mosquito sample tested positive for West Nile virus.

Spraying will begin at about 10 p.m. and continue until about 6 a.m. so long as weather conditions permit. The positive sample was collected in the 3000 block of Birch Leaf Place. Crews will spray about a half-mile radius around the location.

The city will notify residents who live inside the spraying area by phone and will post signs at intersections.

To minimize exposure, residents are advised to close windows and take pets inside. If outside during those hours, residents should watch for the truck and be sure to maintain a safe distance.

For more information, call the city’s environmental services division at 972-874-6340.

Nelson honored for child-related work

The Texas Association for the Protection of Children has announced it will present its 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award to state Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound.

Nelson will be honored for “her longstanding work to strengthen Child Protective Services and increase Texas’ investment in prevention programs, such as the Nurse-Family Partnership, which sends nurses on home visits to help vulnerable, low-income mothers,” according to a press release issued this week.

Known as TexProtects, the nonprofit will honor Nelson during a fundraising event Oct. 14 in Dallas.
