Insight: Does the city enforce its smoking ban on hospital, university campuses?

Both Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas have banned smoking on their grounds, both indoors and outside.

But those bans aren’t tied to the city of Denton’s ordinance that bans smoking in the workplace — which will extend to local bars by 2017.

The city doesn’t have the authority to enforce its ordinance on state property.

The city does have the authority to enforce the smoking ban at hospitals, but enforcement stops at 30 feet away from entrances, said city spokeswoman Lindsey Baker.

A business may ban smoking on its property, but enforcement beyond 30 feet from its doors becomes a private matter, Baker said.
