Schools to evaluate superintendents

School boards across the area will meet in the coming weeks to evaluate district superintendents and discuss salaries.

Although their contracts typically last for three years, public school superintendents are evaluated annually by board members in a closed-session meeting. Trustees will discuss how well the superintendent carried out his or her duties over the past year and potentially offer a raise.

Argyle ISD school board members met Monday night to discuss the future of Superintendent Telena Wright, a 17-year veteran of the district.

Board members said the discussion about her contract will continue during a special meeting Thursday night, when the board is expected to make a decision on her future with the district.

Board members decided in April not to extend Wright’s contract, which expires in 2018, but did not take any official action.

Although then-board President Brian Ratcliff didn’t elaborate on the reasoning behind the decision not to extend her contract, he sent out a statement saying board members would be looking for a replacement “to lead our district through our fast growth while maintaining the legacy of excellence.”

The decision sparked a public controversy and two new board members, Brad Lowry and Jeff Williams, filled Ratcliff’s seat as well as a board vacancy left by Greg Aune when he moved out of the district the previous year.

Denton ISD also will discuss Superintendent Jamie Wilson’s contract, which is set to expire in June.

Wilson succeeded former 14-year Superintendent Ray Braswell in 2012 and will be evaluated during Tuesday’s board meeting, where officials are expected to extend his contract.

Most of the contracts extended to area superintendents are for a three-year period, except for Lake Dallas ISD’s Gayle Stinson.

Her contract runs for five years and will expire in 2021.

Outside of a base salary, benefits in superintendent contracts can include reimbursement for business expenses, travel allotments and a district-provided cellphone or laptop computer.

To find out when your local school board meets next, visit the district’s website and look for the “school board” or “board of trustees” tab.
