Officials: Suspect in shooting death of Little Elm detective died during gunfire exchange

Police gunfire killed the man who fatally shot Little Elm police Detective Jerry Walker last month during a standoff at the suspect's home, authorities said on Monday.

A Little Elm officer shot Rudy Garcia during a brief exchange of gunfire with responding officers on Jan. 17, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office and Denton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Orlando Hinojosa.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a man with a gun at about 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17. When they arrived at the suspect's home, located at 1433 Turtle Cove Drive, Garcia barricaded himself inside with a 'long rifle," police said.

Garcia eventually opened fire, striking Walker in the neck, before police returned fire. Little Elm Police Chief Rodney Harrison said the entire exchange lasted about a minute.
Hours later, a police robot entered the home and confirmed Garcia had died.
