The American Red Cross is urging local residents to donate blood to help patients experiencing a traumatic injury or other serious medical conditions requiring a transfusion.
May is Trauma Awareness Month, and while the service organization is looking for donors of all blood types, it's especially needing universal type O negative and AB donors, according to Red Cross officials. The organization notes that about 41 million emergency room visits and 2.3 million hospital admissions are trauma related.
"In trauma situations, when there's no time to check a patient's blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma," said Jan Hale, Red Cross Southwest Blood Services Region communications manager in a statement.
Donors that give by May 14 are eligible for a $1,000 GiftCertificates.com gift card.
