Tracy Flax was checking the mail at about noon in front of her house in the 800 block of FM1173, also known as McCart Street. According to Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 19-year-old man was driving a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup westbound along the road.

Haschel said the man took his eyes off the road and drifted onto the shoulder, hitting Flax and her mailbox. The man turned around immediately and called 911, Haschel said.

Flax was taken to Medical City Denton and died from her injuries just after 1 p.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's website. Haschel said an investigation is ongoing, but there was no preliminary evidence the man was intoxicated or texting while driving. No arrest has been made.

Flax is survived by her husband and two children. She served in the U. S. Air Force and had recently helped start a Women Veterans of America chapter in Denton County, according to her Facebook page.
