'Click It or Ticket' enforcement begins Monday

Police officers around the state will begin actively ticketing drivers and their passengers who are not properly buckled up on Monday as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's "Click it or Ticket" campaign.

During the campaign's enforcement period, which runs through June 4, police will look for people who are not properly buckled up while driving, including children who are not in the appropriate booster seat or child safety seat.

Violators could face fines of up to $200 for a citation.

Last year, 994 people died because they weren't wearing seat belts — an increase of 9 percent over the 908 fatalities recorded in 2015, according to a press release from TxDOT.
