Corinth ranked as the No. 14 safest city in Texas for the second consecutive year, according to a report conducted by SafeWise, a home security and safety news organization.
The SafeWise report included several other Denton County cities, including Trophy Club at No. 1, Little Elm at No. 4 and Flower Mound at No. 7. In total, there are eight cities that are either completely or partially in Denton County among the top 50 on the list and 13 in the top 100. Denton is No. 97 on the list.
Corinth City Manager Bob Hart said Corinth maintains its safe city status by excelling in community outreach.
“I think the [police] department does an extremely good job on outreach in the community and having residents involved,” Hart said. “We have volunteers that work closely with the police department, and they go out into the community and serve as the ears and eyes of the department and help feed information back to the department.”
Hart also credited the city’s safety to the police officers who are “friendly and courteous.”
The cities were ranked using data from the 2015 FBI Crime Report, according to the SafeWise report. All cities with a population of less than 10,000 residents, or cities who did not submit a complete crime report to the FBI were omitted from the ranking process.
The SafeWise report took into account the number of reported violent crimes which include murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery and the number of reported property crimes, which include burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. The report also used calculations of the likelihood of those crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city, the report said.
Six Denton County cities — Corinth, Trophy Club, Little Elm, Highland Village, Flower Mound and Prosper — reported zero murders for 2014-2015. Frisco and The Colony reported two murders each. Six cities reported fewer than 10 robberies, seven cities reported fewer than seven incidents of arson and Prosper reported zero rapes.
