The suspect and victim involved in a shooting Monday evening near Quakertown Park know each other, according to Denton police.
Investigators on Tuesday continued to search for the suspect in connection with the shooting early Monday evening at the intersection of North Bell Avenue and Mingo Road. The victim, a 26-year-old Lewisville man whose name has not been released, is expected to survive after sustaining at least two gunshot wounds, including one in the neck.
Denton police would not provide a description of the male suspect, only saying that both parties previously interacted with each other.
Department spokesman Shane Kizer said he didn't know about a possible interaction or altercation that may have preceded the shooting. Investigators are trying to establish a motive, he said.
"They're entertaining all the possibilities," Kizer said.
An off-duty officer first heard the shots ring out near the intersection, which is about a half-mile northeast of the downtown Square, about 6:40 p.m. The officer came upon the injured victim, along with the late-model Jaguar XF he had been driving.
The man had driven through the metal fence surrounding Massey Auto Sales Service & Parts. Meanwhile, the suspect had fled the scene in a small sedan, police said.
Kizer said the suspect and the victim had been driving southbound on Mingo Road. When both cars approached the stoplight at Bell Avenue, the suspect fired multiple shots at the victim, causing the Jaguar to veer left and crash into the business, Kizer said.
The area was shut down for hours as police photographed the Jaguar, which struck the fence and crashed into an older-model Mercedes in the car lot.
The victim was treated at Medical City Denton, but Kizer didn't know whether he was well enough to speak to investigators Tuesday.
Police said officers did not find a weapon in the Jaguar after the incident.
