Denton County Sheriff's Office investigating misconduct allegations in county tax office

The Denton County Sheriff's Office is investigating allegations of misconduct against an employee in the Denton County Tax Office, according to Sheriff Tracy Murphree.

He said the allegations center around the "registration of motor vehicles" but would not elaborate, citing the active investigation.

"I'd rather not go into details on it right now," he said.

County Tax Assessor/Collector Michelle French said the office is fully cooperating with investigators. She heads the tax office, which collects property taxes, renews vehicle registration and contracts with several car dealerships to issue titles on new vehicles.

"It's pretty early in the investigation," French said.

The tax office also provides new vehicle titles and registration at some dealership locations. The office has six locations within the county, including Lewisville, Cross Roads, Frisco and Flower Mound. The main Denton office is at 1505 E. McKinney St.

County Judge Mary Horn said she is aware of the allegations but would not comment on the active investigation.

"We're just going to have to let things run their course," she said.
