Denton ISD proposes future zone attendance boundary changes for two elementary schools

The Denton school board will vote on attendance boundary changes affecting Cross Oaks and Providence Elementary schools at its next meeting in three weeks.

During Tuesday night's board meeting, Denton ISD Area Superintendent Susannah O'Bara laid out a potential change to areas in the U.S. Highway 380 Corridor as two new subdivisions gear up to start building homes.

Oak Hill Ranch and Prairie Oaks will start construction in 2018 and bring more than 1,000 future lots to Denton ISD. Both developments are currently zoned to Cross Oaks Elementary School, located at 600 Liberty Blvd. in Cross Roads.

But district officials say the growth of those two developments would push Cross Oaks over capacity in the coming years. To combat that, O'Bara suggested that any developments east of FM720 be rezoned to Providence Elementary School, located at 1000 FM2931, about three miles north of Cross Oaks.

That means kids living in the Oak Hill Ranch subdivision would attend Cross Oaks, while those in the Prairie Oaks subdivision would go to Providence.

"When you add those 300 [Oak Hill Ranch] lots, along with the natural growth that's taking place, both of those schools will begin to fill," O'Bara said. "Cross Oaks will be relieved somewhat of that potential future growth, but it's still large."

Cross Oaks has a student enrollment of 728 students this year, while Providence has 420. If the change is approved, the schools would even out around the 2025-26 school year with approximately 800 students each. If the change isn't approved, Cross Oaks is projected to have 1,054 students in that same year, while Providence would have 566.

"There aren't any families that live in these subdivisions yet, so we're just moving them before they get here," Denton ISD Superintendent Jamie Wilson said.

The district is also planning for another elementary school farther east along the 380 Corridor, but the exact location has not been determined.

The next Denton school board meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Central Services Building, 1307 N. Locust St. in Denton.
