Denton police prepare for annual Shop with a Cop event

Denton police officers are gearing up once again for the annual "Shop with a Cop" event, which has provided clothing and toys to more than 2,000 needy children since 1991.

The event will take place at 7 a.m. Monday at the Wal-Mart located at 1515 S. Loop 288. In collaboration with Interfaith Ministries, the Denton Police Officers' Association organizes the event every year.

Needy families can be nominated by individual officers or register through Interfaith Ministries. During the shopping spree, police officers make sure the kids have a healthy balance of clothing and toys. The police association's goal this year is to provide assistance to about 150 children.

The Denton Shop with a Cop program is a nonprofit charitable organization, and donations are tax deductible. Donations can be made at the Denton Area Teachers Credit Union, 225 W. Mulberry St., in the name of "Denton Shop with a Cop."

Donations can also be submitted online at www.dentonshopwithacop.com or by mail to the Denton Police Officers' Association, P.O. Box 51103, Denton, TX 76201.
