The man fatally shot by Denton police Monday has been identified as 45-year-old Lawrence Shaw, who was originally from California but spent time in several other states before the shooting, officials said.
Troy Taylor, Denton chief death investigator and spokesman for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office, said Shaw's family in California hasn't seen him since the early 1990s. Taylor said Shaw lived in Kansas, Colorado, Virginia and Arizona before coming to Denton.
Shaw advanced on officers with a knife Monday afternoon when a Denton patrol officer shot and killed him in a wooded area across from the Goodson Engineering building at 1500 Spencer Road, according to officials with Denton police and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The officer who fired the shot has not been identified, and the Texas Rangers are still investigating the circumstances behind the incident.
