State Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls, filed for re-election Monday.
He has represented District 30 since 2003. He is expected to face a primary challenge from state Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Frisco. Fallon represents House District 106, which includes most of eastern Denton County, as well as Aubrey and Sanger.
District 30 is expansive, covering nearly 1 million people across 14 North Texas counties, including much of northern Denton County. The district also includes all of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Erath, Grayson, Jack, Montague, Palo Pinto, Parker, Wichita, Wise, and Young counties, as well as parts of Collin County.
The city of Denton is split between District 30 and District 12, with the University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, and the residents of northern and central Denton all in District 30.
The Texas primary is March 6. Candidate filing began Saturday and hopefuls have until 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, to apply for the ballot. Voters may cast a ballot in either the Republican or Democratic primary, but not both. The deadline to register to vote in the primary is Feb. 5.
