Sylvia Barnard passed away peacefully Friday October 12, 2012 at home on hospice care, surrounded by loved ones. She had been facing health challenges for the past year, and was ready to make her transition with dignity. Sylvia Bell Barnard was born in Springcreek, Oklahoma on New Year’s Day in 1919 to Mary and Amos McClure. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold "Barney" Barnard Jr., who passed away October 22, 2006. She was one of five siblings, Paul McClure, Lucille Scott, Gene McClure, and Del Jensen, all who have preceded her, except for Lucille Scott who resides at Lake Forest Good Samaritan. She is also survived by her two children, Kim Barnard who resides in Springtown, Texas and Kent Barnard who resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

As a young lady, Sylvia worked for the Department of Justice. Her personal mission and passion was to courageously take a positive position for people who did not have the capabilities or skills to take a stand for themselves.

She married Harold Barnard Jr. on April 8, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was a homemaker raising her daughter and son. The family moved to Denton, Texas in 1967.

Sylvia loved volunteering in several capacities. She served as former president of the auxiliary fire department in Argyle, Texas. She was an active member of a local gardening club. Sylvia volunteered for many years both at Westgate Hospital and Denton Regional Medical Center.

Visitation will be held at DeBerry Funeral Directors at 2025 W. University Drive, Denton, Texas, Monday, October 15, 2012 from 6 to 8:00 pm.

A memorial service will be held at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church in Denton on Tuesday October 16, 2012 at 11 AM with The Reverend Canon H.W. Herrmann, SSC officiating. Burial will follow at Graham/Argyle Cemetery in Argyle, TX.
