Rev. Eugene R. Sweeney

Rev. Eugene R. Sweeney, S.M., 79, passed peacefully to eternal life on October 27, 2012 in San Antonio. Born September 22, 1933 in East St. Louis, IL, to John and Adele Sweeney; he made contact with the Marianists as a student at Central Catholic High School in E. St. Louis.

He professed his first vows as a member of the Society of Mary on August 15, 1952. After receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Economics from St. Mary’s University in 1954 he professed his final vows in July of 1957. Fr. Sweeney was ordained in June of 1978 following studies for an M.A. at Notre Dame University and at St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto where he completed a Masters of Divinity. He had a long ministerial career of teaching for over twenty years in Marianist high schools in Canada and the United States. Fr. Sweeney faithfully served as a retreat master, campus minister and parish priest in Omaha, St. Louis, Denton, TX and San Antonio. Most notably he was pastor at St. Mark’s parish in Denton for ten years from 1994-2004.

Three brothers preceded him in death. Two sisters Joan Goetz of Union, MO and Eleanor Hayden of Villa Ridge, MO and his religious brothers of the Society of Mary survive him. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 29th from 6 – 7 pm, rosary at 7 pm in the chapel of the Marianist Residence, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4pm on Tuesday, October 30th also at the Marianist Residence. Interment will be in the Marianist Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
