 Joanna Virginia Hicks, Ph.D., 85, native of Chattanooga, TN passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013.She graduated from Red Bank High School, attended University of Chattanooga, and completed her Bachelor’s degree at Texas Women’s University.She earned a Master’s degree from University of Tennessee, and her Doctorate from Texas Women’s University.

 Dr. Hicks taught at several colleges, including Florida State and Memphis State and retired from Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX; where she taught Physical Education for many years.At one time, she was ranked number 10 nationally in badminton and published a book on how to play badminton.She moved back to Chattanooga in 2010 to be near her family.

 She was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Hicks Barnett of Denver, CO. She is survived by her brother, William T. Hicks (Lerlene) of Chattanooga; four nieces: Coral Barnett Juras (Ray) of Oak Ridge, Jade Barnett Whiteford (Kip) of California, Heather Barnett Ponek (Mike) of California and Diane Hicks Walker (Randy) of Chattanooga; plus great-nieces and great-nephews.

 Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace with Reverend Bert Jones officiating.Interment will be private.Visitation is 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, (423) 877-3524.Visit www.lanefh.com to share condolences.
