James Whitney Owens went to work for the Lord on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 10:22 pm. Jimmy was born on August 16, 1936 in Honea Path, South Carolina to Mary and Harry Owens. He came to Denton with his parents before he was 1 year old. He attended Denton Schools and graduated in 1954 from Denton High School. He attended North Texas State until he and his best friend, Lewis Behringer, leased B&O from Gulf Corp. On April 2, 1971, he married his best friend and love, Mona Grisham. In September 1971, he and Lewis bought B&O from Gulf and retired after 30 years at the same place.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years. His sons Jim and Whit of Garland, his step son Randy Grisham of Denton, and two step daughters Sherry Mellgren of Frisco, Sondra Dickerson of Gordonville, and Shelli Leach who passed way in 2004.

Also surviving him are 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, four sisters Savannah (Buddy) Smith of Anderson, SC, Linda Dyer (Steve) of McKinney, Dianne Spickler and Mary Ann Sellers of Denton, and many nieces and nephews and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013 from 5-8 pm at DeBerry Funeral Directors. Services will be at First Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Jimmy will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park. Donations can be made to the Shelli Leach Scholarship DHS, or to the Scottish Rite Children's Home in Dallas.

Pallbearers will include Harold Calvert, Ken Moran, Mitch Mullens, Danny Davis, Bill Neu, and Dale Brown. Honorary pallbearers will include Lewis Behringer, Jim White, Walt Brazeal, Robert Beaucham, John Jeans, Walter Owens, Don Samuelson, and Butch Shaw.
