Caroline Irene Smalley Janssen went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 29, 2013. She was born on Oct. 25, 1932 in Pekin, Ill., to Warren and Cathryn Weller Smalley.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Dr. Calvin Janssen.

She was a registered nurse and a teacher. She graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1949, Samuel Merritt Hospital School of Nursing, Oakland, Calif., in 1954. She received her bachelor of science in nursing from Baylor University, Waco, Texas and her masters of education from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.

She taught nursing at Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing, Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Knoxville. She also taught Health Occupations in Texas and Tennessee. She worked as a nurse at Erlanger Hospital, Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Baylor University, and John Petersmith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas and numerous other hospitals throughout Texas and Tennessee. She was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church and the Agape Sunday School Class. She was a volunteer at Graysville Elementary School in Ringgold, Ga.

Survivors include her four children, Diane Heckman and husband, Jim, Deborah Thomas and husband, Greg, Steven Janssen and wife, Terry, and Denise Black and husband, Larry and nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Bob Smalley and Ernest Smalley. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday May 4, 2013, at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Daughtery officiating. The interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East. Visit to share words of comfort to the family and view the memorial tribute. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN.
