Velma Jewell Massey, 91, passed away on May 16. She was born on March 10, 1922 to Emmett and Velma Jewell Wynn in Denton, TX. She lived in Denton until her later years, then moved to Krum. Her final years were spent in Argyle. She married Jimmie Ed Massey on November 21, 1943.
Velma graduated from Denton High School and North Texas Teachers College (University of North Texas). She was a gentle soul, known for her optimism, warm smile, and love for animals and children. She was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, teaching primarily first grade. Velma was very artistic; she enjoyed working with flowers, crafting, and painting. After her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed crafting together, operating a wood-crafting business with her son and daughter-in-law.
She was a long time member of Grace Temple Baptist Church in Denton, and had recently joined the New Life First Baptist Church in Krum.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jimmie Ed Massey and son Jimmy Wynn Massey. She is survived by daughter Marilyn Blanton and husband Jim, daughter-in-law Becky Massey, grandchildren Michael Todd Massey and wife, Jodi, Timothy Kirk Massey and wife Tina, Tiffany Massey Darley and husband Brian, Gregory Mark Anderson, Mathew Scott Anderson and wife Stephanie, great-grand children Valerie, Ben, Wynn, and Zachary Massey, and Jack, Logan, and Tatum Jewell Anderson.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00pm at DeBerry Funeral Directors. Funeral service will be Monday, 2:00pm in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Denton. Pallbearers will be Todd Massey, Tim Massey, Brian Darley, Mark Anderson, Matt Anderson, and Leon Garrett.
