Capt. Gerald Francis Smith (USN, Ret.), 86, of Denton passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in Dallas. Gerald (Jerry) was born January 7, 1927 in Honey Grove, Texas to Francis Warren Smith and Eula Beatrice Bates Smith. He graduated from Corsicana High School, the U.S. Naval Academy, M.I.T. with a Naval Engineers Degree and University of North Texas with a Master of Business Administration degree. Jerry married Mary Jarrell Smith on January 6, 1951 in Silver Spring, MD. He retired from the Navy in 1974, and from that time worked on the family ranch near Justin, TX. In recent years, he volunteered at the Denton Community Food Center.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Another memorial service will be held in the Washington, DC area at a later date.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary Smith of Denton; daughters, Anne Smith and husband Malcolm Bertoni of Washington, DC and Karen Smith and husband Donald Sweetkind of Golden, CO; son, Gerald F. Smith, Jr. and wife Robin McCauley Smith of Lebanon, NJ; grandchildren, Adam Christopher Smith of Columbus, OH, Julia Smith Moore of Harrisonburg, VA, Elizabeth Grace Smith of Lebanon, NJ, Lindsey Meredith Smith of Lebanon, NJ, Nicola Smith Bertoni of Washington, DC and Reid Smith Sweetkind of Golden, CO; great grandchildren, Charles and Joseph Smith and Abigail Moore; nieces, Barbara Sadler Hilliard of Austin and Carol Sadler Hollen of Dallas. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mary Lou Sadler and Dorothy Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Denton Community Food Center or a charity of your choice.
