James Orus Hammons, 85, of Pilot Point, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013 in Pilot Point, TX. James was born August 10, 1928 in Denton County, TX to Richard and Johnnie (Robinson) Hammons. He married Nina Merle Cockrill on February 13, 1948 in Sanger, TX. James served in the United States Army and was a member of the Masonic Lodge 270 in Pilot Point.

He is survived by his wife of Pilot Point; two sons, Ronald Lyn Hammons and wife Sue of Bowie, Timothy Jim Hammons of Gordonville; one daughter, Carolyn Kay Shelton of Pilot Point; one sister, Jean of Gainesville; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Cheryl, Hanna, Brad, Kimberly, Greg, Jeremy, Kristen; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bobby Glyn Hammons; two sisters, Alma Murrel and June Payne.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00PM, Friday, October 25, 2013 at Slay Memorial Chapel in Aubrey, TX. A funeral service will be held at 3:00PM, Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Slay Memorial Chapel with Rev. Luther Slay officiating. Burial will follow at Tyson Cemetery in Mountain Springs.
