Herman Arthur Newsom, a resident of Austin, Texas formerly of Denton, Texas, passed away November l, 2013 at the age of 99 years. Herman was born July 14, 1914 at home in Silvercreek Community in Parker County Texas to Daniel P. and Beatrice Rigsby Newsom. He was married to Mary Irene Moseley on June 5, 1936. Herman graduated from Denton High School in 1931, from North Texas Teacher's College, now North Texas State University, in 1935, and completed his PhD in Elementary Education at the University of Texas in 1955. During his career in education Dr. Newsom served as classroom teacher, principal and administrator in Texas public schools in Olney, Sweetwater, Itasca, Edinburg, Abilene, Austin, Deer Park and Odessa. Herman retired in 1977 as Professor of Education from North Texas State University where he taught graduate classes and supervised the student teacher program.

Dr. Newsom led his family in active participation in the Baptist Church in all the cities where they lived. He was also a very active member of the Lion's Club and worked with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in support of his children's participation in those organizations. As he neared retirement and for many years after, he and Mary Irene enjoyed traveling with the " Happy Gadabouts of Texas." Herman moved to Austin, Texas in 2010 to be nearer to family and resided at Emeritus at Becket Meadows and Stonebridge Health Center. The family is extremely grateful to both facilities for the loving care he received.

Herman was preceded in death by his wife of almost 53 years, Mary Irene Newsom, his brother James Elvin Newsom, his sisters Nena Newsom Holloway and Frankie Newsom Crawford, and his granddaughter, Suzanne Renee Newsom. He is survived by his son, Rollo Newsom and wife Sylvia, daughter Mayrene Tucker, grandchildren, Herman Leigh Newsom, Walter Scott Newsom and wife Teri, Cindy Tucker, Sonia Fasullo and husband Dominick, great-grandchildren William Newsom, Courtney Fasullo and Kyle Fasullo, sisters-in-law Merl Newsom and Nell Moseley, and by a large extended family and a host of friends.

Dr. Newsom's funeral will be held at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St. in Denton, Texas on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm with the funeral service at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at the Newsom Family Cemetery near Azle. In lieu of flowers the family has suggest memorial contributions be given to the Lion's Club of Denton or to a charity of your choice.
