Mary Ann McElroy, 61, of Ponder was peacefully called home to her next job as our guardian angel on Sunday, April 13, after a long battle with cancer at Presbyterian Hospital in Denton with her family and loved ones at her side. Mary was born on April 7, 1953 to Ernest and Hazel Matthews in Longview, Texas.
She married her soul mate, Mike McElroy on January 3, 1970 in Highland Park, Texas after meeting him in his sailors uniform under the space needle at the Hemisfair in San Antonio Texas in 1968. They moved to Ponder in 1982 to raise their children in a small school in the country. She began working for the Ponder Independent School District in 1985.
Mary's first love was her family. Her second love was her school family where she impacted multiple generations of children and their families. She looked forward to Mondays so she could see all their beautiful little smiling faces.
Visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church in Ponder on Saturday, April 19, from 12-1 p.m. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m.
Mary is survived by Mike McElroy, her husband of 44 years; son, Keith McElroy and his wife, Apryl of Royse City; daughters, Brandy Doby and her husband Nick of Ponder, and Shannon Walton of Cypress; brother, Eugene Bruce Matthews and wife Debbie of Ponder; seven grandchildren (which her life revolved around), many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, brothers-in laws and sisters-in-law. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Hazel Matthews; sister, Doris Patterson and son-in-law Randy Walton.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Ponder Education Foundation in Mary's name.
