Surrounded by her loving family, Karen Adams Maddry, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2014, at her residence in Denton, TX. She was born August 5, 1935, in Ponca City, OK, to Charles Donald and Leota T. Adams. Karen graduated from Newkirk High School in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1957. She served as president of her social sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, while attending OU. She was devoted to her loving husband, Carl Dale Maddry, for 56 years. They were married August 24, 1957, in San Francisco, CA. They made their home in Dallas, TX, for many years before relocating to Denton in 1972. Karen was a dedicated middle school English teacher for 20 years before retiring in 1991. She was an active member of The Searchers Class, First United Methodist Church of Denton. She so loved and appreciated her church family. Karen and Dale were members of Trippers through FUMC and enjoyed travel. Dillon, Colorado, and its surrounding area became their second home each summer for many years.
Karen is survived by her husband, Dale Maddry, Denton; daughter, Beth Nance and husband Mickey, Denton; son, Michael Maddry and wife Libba, Houston, TX; granddaughter, Lauren David and husband Steven, Argyle, TX; and two grandsons, Taylor Maddry, Katy, TX and Travis Maddry, Austin,TX; as well as extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Don and Leota Adams.
Karen was a very loving and supportive daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered for always having an encouraging word and a desire to honor others. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10th, at 10:30 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, Denton, TX. In lieu of flowers, Karen and her family request donations be made to one of the following in her memory: First United Methodist Church, Denton; Emily Fowler Library, Denton; or Denton Young Life (DentonArea.younglife.org).
