We don't know about you, but we were worried sick about the recent string of armed robberies at Denton stores and motels. Now, Denton police have arrested and charged 28-year-old Xavier Perkins of Denton with two of the robberies with more charges pending.

Julian Gill, the Denton Record-Chronicle's police reporter, interviewed Perkins in jail. He told Gill that he turned to robbery because his criminal record prevented him from getting a job to support his wife and 8-year-old son.

But enough about Perkins.

Let's talk about the Denton Police Department's dogged, two-month-long investigation. Detectives interviewed witnesses, looked at surveillance videos, squeezed local snitches for information and tracked suspicious vehicles at the scenes of the crimes.

The hard work, none of it very glamorous by movie standards, paid off Monday night when police caught Perkins at the motel where he was staying.

Congratulations to the Denton Police Department's major crimes unit, which is led by Sgt. Danny Fletcher. Chief Lee Howell should treat Fletcher and his investigators to a box of doughnuts for a job well done.
