Burglars are apparently being drawn to residences with garage doors left open.
During the scorching part of summer, that’s a common practice by some homeowners. It’s most common to lift the garage door just a little bit. It lets the real hot air out, but can also let the housebreaker in.
Temperatures in garages can be quite unbearable this time of year, especially in late afternoons. And that’s not good for efficient use of such electrical devices as freezers or that extra refrigerator.
Burglars know some people open garage doors to help protect those appliances, and perhaps reduce their electric bill.
Police note that burglars also scope out homes where windows, and even doors, are left open a crack.
Homeowners with evaporative coolers must keep a window or two open a crack for the outflow of air being pumped into the home. But there are inexpensive devices that prevent the window from opening wider.
Burglars will seek out easy-entry homes, rather than having to break in. And once inside the garage, the interior garage door is often no deterrent. Police advise that those doors be both sturdy and secured by a deadbolt lock.
Because, once inside a home, it’s easy for a burglar to get back out. The scofflaw can even walk out the front door when the coast is clear.
Burglars want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Rifle some drawers, check for cash and jewelry. Slip away.
Or, open that slightly ajar garage door, drive a truck inside, and take everything of value except the proverbial kitchen sink.
