Denton to take national stage

It’s more than a football game. When the Mean Green plays host to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Tuesday, the team, the fans, the university and the city of Denton will be on a national stage. The game, set for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Apogee Stadium, is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN2.

It’s a rare and exciting opportunity to introduce ourselves to a lot of people who may not be familiar with UNT or Denton. It’s our chance to shine.

This will be the first nationally televised game from Apogee Stadium, but viewers should get an opportunity to see more than just the field and the stands as they watch the game. We understand that film crews will be visiting various points around the campus and city prior to kickoff to get local footage that will be featured during the broadcast.

The University of North Texas is running a special ESPN2 For Tuesday ticket offer, so if you haven’t had an opportunity to visit Apogee Stadium, the game should provide the perfect chance to do so. You can purchase two tickets for $10, which will put you in general admission sets in the stadium’s signature wing-shaped section at the north end.

You can purchase tickets at the Mean Green athletic ticket office on the west side of Apogee Stadium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, but tickets can also be purchased online through a partnership with several local sponsors. That means you can now support the Mean Green and your favorite local businesses at the same time. Just visit http://www.northtexasfanguide.com for a list of participating businesses and promotional codes to purchase tickets.

Mean Green fans should also have something else to cheer about when they head out to the game on Tuesday. UNT and the Texas Department of Transportation are planning to have the pedestrian bridge connecting the main campus to Apogee Stadium open for the game.

The pedestrian bridge, which is 20 feet wide, 354 feet long and 17 feet tall, will offer a safer, more direct route to the stadium. Formerly, many football game attendees used the North Texas Boulevard bridge to cross the interstate from the Fouts Field parking lot to Apogee Stadium.

We hope you’ll get caught up in the excitement and join the crowd on Tuesday for the game. It’s your chance to help the team — the Mean Green, UNT and all the folks in Denton and beyond who are working so hard to promote our area.

Let’s do our best to fill Apogee Stadium on Tuesday night.

A lot of people will be watching.
