Help women fight heart disease

Comments () A Text Size

Many people are surprised to learn that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women older than the age of 20. But the truth is, heart disease is not just a male problem — it’s a killer that strikes more women than men, according to the American Heart Association, and it’s more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

While one in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, heart disease claims the lives of one in three, according to information on the American Heart Association website. Heart disease kills one woman per minute, taking more lives than the next four leading causes of death combined.

On average, 64 women die from heart disease every day in Texas, statistics show.

To raise awareness of heart disease among women, the American Heart Association created the Go Red movement 10 years ago. This effort celebrates the energy, passion and power of women across the country and helps raise awareness of the threat posed by heart disease.

Go Red for Women events also promote healthy lifestyles and raise money to help fund the fight against heart disease.

It’s an important fight, and it’s one that we can win. You can do your part to help by supporting the 2013 Denton Go Red for Women Luncheon that’s coming up Feb. 8.

This year’s luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Gateway Center on the campus of the University of North Texas. Attendees are encouraged to wear red to the luncheon to help focus attention on heart health for women.

A silent auction and socializing will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the luncheon at 11:30 a.m.

A fashion show, featuring clothing designed with the color red and created by fashion students at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, will be presented. Guests will vote for their favorite fashions, and the winning fashion students will receive cash awards.

Parking will be available at the Fouts Field parking lot, just across the street from the Gateway Center, off Interstate 35E on North Texas Boulevard.

Cause sponsor is Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, and the media sponsor is the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Individual tickets for the event, priced at $40 each, will be available only until Jan. 30. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Tickets are available at Northstar Bank, 400 N. Carroll Blvd., and DATCU, 225 W. Mulberry St. Sponsorship tables are still available. For tickets and for sponsorship information, call Lee Albright at 940-442-5443 or Phyllis Pittman at 940-391-1691.

Funds raised through the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement go directly to research and educational programs for women and women’s heart health.

We encourage each of you to join the fight to heighten awareness of heart disease, encourage healthy lifestyles and promote continuing education to help women learn how to protect themselves, their friends and their families.

You can accomplish all of these goals by supporting the 2013 Denton Go Red for Women Luncheon on Feb. 8.

It’s a great way to show you care.
