There’s nothing quite like following basketball playoff games, especially if you have the opportunity to sit on the sidelines and watch the action.
The resounding roar of the crowds, the pounding of feet racing from side to side, the fast-action layups for at-the-last-second scores, the camaraderie of both the teammates and those watching, and so much more keep us riveted from start to finish.
This week is proving to be a busy one for quite a few of our local teams as they vie in the final rounds leading up to a state title.
In the University Interscholastic League state semifinals that started Thursday, the Krum girls suffered a heart-breaking loss to Mexia. Friday night the boys’ and girls’ teams from Liberty Christian played in the TAPPS semifinals while the boys from Ponder played in the Region II Class 2A semifinals in Stephenville.
A number of other local and area schools made district playoffs, including the Denton High School boys’ team, the Guyer High School boys’ and girls’ teams, the Ryan High School girls’ team, the Argyle High School boys’ and girls’ team, and the Sanger High School boys’ team.
All of these teams have demonstrated their skill and desire to be among the elite.
And at courtside, we must say they already are the best in team spirit and having achieved a turn in the playoffs. Whether winning or losing these particular playoff games, they’re winners in our eyes for their individual and collective commitment to being the best they can be.
Oftentimes, the final score simply reflects a bit of luck and timing. That’s what makes basketball so intriguing and, in our opinion, fun to watch.
Being fond of playing a game of hoops ourselves, we can only dream of achieving what these basketball players have already accomplished. The hundreds of hours of practice, the twisted ankles from a last-minute launch, the glory of a final-second dunk, the perfected blocks and the exhaustion from intense battles are what make this game worth playing and watching.
Yes, we still love our football, but we’re also basketball boosters around here. How can we not be with so many outstanding teams at the top of their games this week?
It makes us want to hit the court ourselves, imagining the glory of the game itself.
We commend each and every one of these players for making the state playoffs.
Take a bow.
You deserve it.
