Help firefighters fund MDA efforts

Motorists in the city of Denton today should be on alert at major intersections for Denton firefighters who are wrapping up their annual “Fill the Boot” campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

We urge all drivers to be courteous and cautious to assist firefighters, and we hope that everyone will toss in a donation when the boot is passed their way.

We also encourage those waiting at traffic signals to be patient when the car ahead of them pauses to allow firefighters to accept a contribution.

It’s not easy to walk up and down narrow traffic medians near intersections holding a boot aloft, and we commend the firefighters on their efforts to help a good cause.

In addition to funding research teams worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of 200 medical clinics and facilitates support groups for families affected by neuromuscular disease.

Firefighters have been raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since the International Association of Firefighters became the first national sponsor of MDA in 1954. Denton has been participating in the campaign for more than 50 years.

“The support we have received in the past has been phenomenal and we appreciate that,” said Battalion Chief Brian Glenn.

He said firefighters will also host an annual golf tournament at Champions Circle on May 15 and are still looking for sponsors and donors to help the event become a success. For more information about MDA or how to participate in this year’s golf tournament, call 940-391-1166 or email brian.glenn@cityofdenton.com.

Glenn said the Fill the Boot campaign usually lasts a week, but this year’s drive is a concentrated three-day effort and firefighters are hoping for good weather.

“The longer time frame was usually for the weather, but this time we are going to have shifts rotating out all day unless they get called out,” he said.

Firefighters should be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the following intersections: Carroll Boulevard and University Drive, University Drive and Bonnie Brae Street, University Drive and Interstate 35, Interstate 35E and Fort Worth Drive, Teasley Lane and Dallas Drive, Teasley Lane and Loop 288/Lillian Miller Parkway and Loop 288 and Brinker Road.

“We raised $60,000 during Fill the Boot last year and we are hoping to exceed that this year by at least a dollar,” Glenn said.

We’re sure that local residents can beat last year’s total by more than a buck, and we urge everyone who will be driving in Denton today to have some cash handy for a quick donation.

Take the time to help and don’t forget to give the firefighters a smile and wave to show them how much their efforts are appreciated.
