Pancake supper helps good cause

Don’t be confused if we tell you that it’s time for the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis to serve pancakes for supper.

Just remember to bring a hearty appetite to Denton’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church between 4:30 and 8 p.m. today. Club members will be serving up pancakes by the stack, and you can top them with goodies courtesy of Kolache Haven and Candy Haven.

In addition to all-you-can-eat pancakes, including the gluten-free variety this year, there will also be sausage. Cost for the entire meal is just $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. Tickets are available at www.pancakesupper.com and DATCU, or you can pay at the door.

Adding to the bargain is an opportunity to help a good cause. The annual pancake supper is a fundraiser, and all proceeds will benefit children, including Interfaith Ministries’ Apple Tree Project.

This project provides school supplies, clothing, backpacks and shoes for children from low-income families in the Denton school district. The goal of the effort is to make sure every child gets to start off the new school year with all they need to be on a competitive level with their peers and find success in the classroom.

Currently, Denton school district officials estimate that 41.2 percent of the district’s enrollment (about 10,200 children) qualify as economically disadvantaged, according to information on the Interfaith Ministries’ website.

That’s a lot of young people who need a helping hand, and the annual pancake supper provides a tasty way to get the job done. Last year, the club helped about 1,500 children, and this year’s goal is to raise $20,000.

The pancake supper is also a lot fun. Celebrity chefs will be flipping the pancakes, and this year’s cooks will include city, county and school officials and business leaders. You’re sure to find a lot of familiar faces.

Entertainment will include the Immaculate Conception Catholic School Cherub Choir, Bill Rauhauser’s trio Déjà Vu and the Newton Rayzor Elementary School Tamba Marimba Band, organizers told us. There will also be a silent auction.

The Denton Breakfast Kiwanis have been sponsoring this event for a number of years.

The church is located at 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St. in Denton, so why not plan to join the crowd and support the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis as they raise funds to help a lot of deserving kids?

The annual supper is a great way to help a worthwhile cause while enjoying fellowship with other community minded individuals. It’s a fun way to spend an evening.

And don’t forget the main menu item — the club has been sponsoring this event for several years now, so the pancakes are typically pretty tasty.

You’ll want to get your share, so plan on being in line early to build your stack.

Pancakes for supper? Sounds like a great idea to us.
