Drilling in the Gulf
I'm confused. A recent article in Record-Chronicle [Page 3A, Dec. 31] stated that the drilling moratorium that was rationally imposed by the Obama administration following the tragic BP oil spill in March 2010 was "was eventually lifted and the Obama administration issued the first new drilling permit [last] March. Now the Gulf is humming again and oil executives describe it as the world's best place to drill."
This is a short version of an Associated Press story written by Jonathan Fahey. The longer on-line version points out that, "by early 2012, there will be more rigs in the Gulf designed to drill in its "deep water" - defined as 2,000 feet or deeper - than before the spill."
Yet Jim Penton in his letter to this page on Dec. 28 strongly implied that, "the EPA and other government entities have hampered or stopped search and production of oil and natural gas under the U.S. and its offshore areas." Mr. Penton is not the only one on the political right that has made these specious claims about the Obama Administration hindering oil and gas development.
Does the Record-Chronicle and the AP owe their readers a retraction on this story, or should we consider that maybe the political agenda of many on the right are perhaps the ones misleading readers?
