The League of Women Voters of Denton has been very active registering voters, educating voters on candidates and issues, and participating in “Get out the Vote” campaigns.
The election is not the final step — it is the beginning. We have elected leaders at the local, state and national levels.
A new challenge and opportunity is now in our hands — letting our legislators know our thoughts on the major issues of the day. What is your opinion on education, health care, the environment, voting rights, immigration and the myriad of other issues that face us?
Representative democracy is not a spectator sport. “We the people” are essential participants.
Your legislators want and need to hear from you. Call, send an e-mail, write a letter and go to meetings in your district to let your elected officials know how you want them to represent you. We elected them to represent us, and they do that best by knowing what we think.
Get over it
My goodness, just when I thought I had secured the “Opinion” page for opinions, Larry Beck agrees but then quickly challenges me by stating that opinions must be “informed,” opinions must be “based on generally accepted knowledge” and opinions that are not “fantastical.”
Further, he calls for writers to precede their opinions with the phrase, “In my opinion. ...” He then challenges opinions he disagrees with as opinions that are “baseless allegations that are presented as facts.”
My gosh, how many times do I have to emphatically state that the Opinion page is an “opinion” page — no qualifications, no you must state that this is my opinion, ad nauseum.
Get over it, Mr. Beck and et al, opinions do not have to conform to your criteria. I’ll extend the statement by Oscar Wilde: “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”
Mr. Beck, et al, opinion is not fact, it is opinion — opinion has a pure definition, leave it at that and accept the fact that the Opinion page is an opportunity for all of us to express our opinion. Moreover, if you don’t like my opinion regarding the Opinion page, express your own opinion and leave me to mine.
